Uganda brings forest and savannah together. Trek for mountain gorillas in Bwindi, look for chimpanzees in Kibale, then explore the wildlife and waterways of Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls.

Primate trekking is an active experience, with terrain and time on foot varying each day. Tell us about your group so we can explain suitability, permit requirements and a sensible travel pace.

Distances and routing

Uganda’s parks are spread across the west and north, and road transfers between them take most of a day. Most routes therefore use four to six nights and link two or three areas rather than everything.

Timing

When to travel to Uganda

Months are a guide, not a guarantee. This is how the year usually behaves, and what it means for your dates.

Jan

Drier trails, forest clear

Feb

Good trekking conditions

Mar

Rains begin, muddier

Apr

Wettest month, lush

May

Slow trails, quiet permits

Jun

Drier, gorillas active

Jul

Peak permits, dry trails

Aug

Dry and busy, book early

Sep

Still good, fewer visitors

Oct

Short rains return

Nov

Muddy, green, very quiet

Dec

Drier spells, holidays

Peak season Good Green / quiet

Drier seasons (Jun–Aug, Dec–Feb)

Easier footing in Bwindi and Kibale, clearer views over the crater lakes, and the best conditions for the Nile boat trips.

Wetter seasons (Mar–May, Sep–Nov)

Trails are slick and trekking takes longer, but permits are easier to secure and the forest is at its most alive.

Altitude and humidity

Bwindi sits above 1,400 m and the forest is humid. Expect a slow, steady pace rather than a long day of distance.

Drier months (roughly June–August, December–February)

Generally easier trekking conditions and better forest trails, though rain is possible in any month.

Wetter months (roughly March–May, September–November)

Trails are muddier and trekking slower, but the forest is lush and permits can be easier to secure outside peak dates.

Permit planning

Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are limited and date-specific. Your preferred dates should be checked early in planning.

Seasonal patterns shift year to year and differ within a country. We will tell you honestly what to expect for your dates rather than promise sightings.

Where to go

The regions worth knowing

You rarely need all of them. Two or three regions, connected sensibly, make a better journey than a long list.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Mountain gorilla trekking on permit, with terrain that can be steep and muddy. The surrounding villages and tea country add a day of contrast.

Kibale & Queen Elizabeth

Kibale is chimpanzee forest; Queen Elizabeth combines open plains with the Kazinga Channel boat cruise. Together they make a balanced primate-and-savannah route.

Murchison Falls & the Nile

The Nile cuts through the park in a narrow gorge, with game drives on the Buligi peninsula and boat trips to the base of the falls.

Lake Mburo & the centre

A compact park with zebra, antelope and walking safaris, convenient on the road between Entebbe and the southwest.

What you might see

Wildlife in Uganda

No guide can promise a sighting. What we can do is put you in the right area, in the right month, with a guide who reads it daily.

Mountain gorillas

Bwindi holds roughly half the world's population. Permits are date-specific and sold out months ahead in peak season.

Chimpanzees

Kibale's habituated groups are the most reliable in East Africa, with morning tracking and afternoon walks.

Savannah game

Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls hold elephant, buffalo, lion and Uganda kob along the waterways.

Birds

More than a thousand recorded species, with Albertine Rift endemics in the forest and shoebill in the wetlands.

Practicalities

What to pack

Baggage is limited on light aircraft, and laundry is usually included on safari. Pack lighter than you think.

  • Broken-in waterproof hiking boots with grip
  • Long trousers and long sleeves for trekking
  • Gardening or work gloves for the vegetation
  • Light rain jacket, packed every day of the year
  • Gaiters and a change of socks in a dry bag
  • Refillable bottle and high-energy snacks
  • Yellow fever certificate, checked before travel
  • A porter is customary; bring small notes

Safaris we plan

Uganda journeys

These are the shapes we work from. Take one as it stands, or tell us what to change — most travellers do.

Routes are proposed for your dates rather than fixed departures. Accommodation is described by level, not by property, and no rates are published.

Travel your way

Styles that suit this country

  • Gorilla trekking journeys with a single permit
  • Primate-focused itineraries combining gorilla and chimpanzee trekking
  • Wildlife journeys with boat safaris on the Nile and Kazinga Channel
  • Longer circuits linking forest, savannah and lakes

Before you book

Uganda questions

Where do journeys start?

Entebbe International Airport. Expect a road transfer or a domestic flight depending on the first park.

How long do I need?

Five nights covers one forest experience. Seven to ten nights allows gorillas, chimpanzees and a savannah park at a comfortable pace.

How fit do I need to be?

Gorilla trekking can involve several hours walking in steep, humid forest at altitude. Porters are available and we will discuss your group’s needs honestly.

Are permits included?

Permits are quoted separately unless your proposal states otherwise, because availability and price are set by the wildlife authority.

What about entry and health requirements?

Check your government’s travel advice and Uganda’s official immigration and health sources. Yellow fever documentation is commonly requested.

How close do you get to gorillas?

Groups are visited for a limited time at a distance set by park rules, which rangers enforce. Trekking rules are explained before you set off.

Can children trek?

Minimum ages are set by the wildlife authority and enforced. Share each child’s age at travel so we can check current rules.

Is Uganda good for a first safari?

Yes, if primates are the priority. Most travellers pair Uganda with Kenya or Rwanda for savannah wildlife.
