South Africa makes it easy to build a holiday around more than one interest. Combine Kruger or a private reserve with Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route or the Eastern Cape.

Not all safari regions offer the same experience. We’ll help you choose between national parks and private reserves, then connect your safari with the right city or coastal extension.

Distances and routing

The safari regions of the northeast and the Western Cape are far apart, and most journeys fly between them. Malaria-free reserves in Madikwe and the Eastern Cape are options if that matters to your family.

Peak season Good Green / quiet

Safari dry season (May–Sep)

Clear, cold mornings in the northeast and thin bush. The best months for Kruger and the private reserves.

Cape summer (Nov–Mar)

Dry, sunny and windy in Cape Town and the Winelands, with hot safari days further north.

Two climates, one trip

The Cape and the safari regions sit in different weather systems. We build the route so both work.

Safari dry season (roughly May–September)

Wildlife concentrates around water in the northeast, with cold mornings. The Cape is wetter and windier in these months.

Cape summer (roughly November–March)

Best weather for Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route, with hot safari days in the northeast.

Shoulder months

April and October can offer good conditions in both regions. Your safari and Cape plans should be considered together.

Seasonal patterns shift year to year and differ within a country. We will tell you honestly what to expect for your dates rather than promise sightings.

Where to go

The regions worth knowing

You rarely need all of them. Two or three regions, connected sensibly, make a better journey than a long list.

Kruger & Greater Kruger

A vast national park with excellent self-drive and guided options, surrounded by private reserves that allow off-road viewing and walking.

Sabi Sand private reserve

Adjoining Kruger and known for leopard and close-up viewing, with high-end camps and a guide-and-tracker team.

Cape Town & the Winelands

Mountains, coastline and city life, with the vineyards of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek an hour away. An easy contrast to safari days.

Garden Route & Eastern Cape

A coastal drive with forests, lagoons and small towns, ending at malaria-free reserves in the Eastern Cape.

KwaZulu-Natal

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi for rhino conservation history, with the iSimangaliso wetlands and coast nearby.

What you might see

Wildlife in South Africa

No guide can promise a sighting. What we can do is put you in the right area, in the right month, with a guide who reads it daily.

Leopard in the Sabi Sand

The best place in Africa for close leopard sightings, with off-road access and resident territories.

Kruger's scale

Nearly two million hectares holding lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and over 500 bird species.

Malaria-free options

Madikwe and the Eastern Cape reserves suit families and travellers who would rather avoid prophylaxis.

Coast and ocean

Southern right whales off Hermanus from June, penguins at Boulders and the iSimangaliso wetlands.

Practicalities

What to pack

Baggage is limited on light aircraft, and laundry is usually included on safari. Pack lighter than you think.

  • Warm safari layers plus summer clothes for the Cape
  • A smart casual outfit for Cape Town restaurants
  • Windproof jacket for the Cape and Table Mountain
  • Walking shoes for vineyards and bush walks
  • Sun protection in every season
  • Binoculars and a long lens for the reserves
  • Swimwear for the coast and camp pools
  • A light day bag for self-drive sections

Safaris we plan

South Africa journeys

These are the shapes we work from. Take one as it stands, or tell us what to change — most travellers do.

Routes are proposed for your dates rather than fixed departures. Accommodation is described by level, not by property, and no rates are published.

Before you book

South Africa questions

Where do journeys start?

Usually Johannesburg or Cape Town, with a domestic flight to a safari region or a road transfer.

How long do I need?

Seven nights allows Cape Town and a safari. Ten to twelve nights adds the Winelands, the Garden Route or the Eastern Cape.

Can we avoid malaria medication?

Some reserves, including Madikwe and the Eastern Cape, are malaria-free. Check current health advice with your own doctor rather than relying on general guidance.

Self-drive or guided?

South Africa is one of the easiest places for self-drive, but private reserves require their own guides. A mix works well.

What about entry and health requirements?

Check your government’s travel advice and South Africa’s official immigration and health guidance before booking.

Kruger or a private reserve?

Kruger is vast and better value for longer stays; private reserves offer off-road viewing, walking and smaller camps. Many journeys combine both.

Is it good for families?

Yes, particularly malaria-free reserves with family rooms and shorter drives. Ages and room configurations vary by property.

When is the best time for Cape Town?

The drier summer months are popular for the Cape, while the safari regions are at their best in the dry winter. We balance the two in your route.
