Cape Town to Namibia’s Dunes

A landscape-led journey rather than another big-game circuit: two cities, a desert and an ocean, connected by one flight.

This route suits travellers who have done a safari before, or who want one built around light and space. Cape Town gives you the mountain and the sea; Namibia gives you the oldest desert in the world and a coastline where the dunes run into the Atlantic. Flying between the two keeps the driving honest.

Journeys on this route

Each can run on its own, or be joined into the full combination above.

Before you decide

  • Desert distances are long and the gravel roads demand patience; the route keeps three nights in each area.
  • Sossusvlei is best at sunrise, which means a very early start from camp.
  • Swakopmund is cool in the evenings even in summer — pack a layer.

Questions about this combination

Can we self-drive?

Yes for the Namibian section, with a proper 4x4 and a briefing. Many travellers prefer a guide for the gravel and the park entrances.

Is there any wildlife?

Desert-adapted species and the coast’s seal colonies, but this is not a big-game journey.

Can we add Etosha?

Yes, two or three nights, though it lengthens the trip by a day of driving at each end.
